where R A does not consider any backups or copies to be obsolete. MN Your choice of retention policy is primarily determined by your backup and restore strategy. You also need to consider the availability of suitable storage. The default retention policy uses redundancy with a value of 1, so files are eligible for deletion after they have been backed up only once. Following database creation or a change in retention policy, you may initially have obsolete backups. You can list obsolete backups using the following command:

RMAN> REPORT OBSOLETE;

RMAN> DELETE OBSOLETE;

Figure 1-21 shows the select list now displaying the employees in descending alphabetical order.

By default, the DE LETE OBSOLETE command will prompt for confirmation. You can force deletion of obsolete backups and copies using

You could create a single application that is used as the master for all of your common applications, and then make changes to the common components in the master application and synchronize the changes to the other applications by publishing from the master application or refreshing from individual applications.

In Oracle 10.1 and above, configuring a Flashback Recovery Area will automatically age out old files based on the retention policy. If the Flashback Recovery Area is fuU and no files qualify for deletion, the current backup will fail. In addition, the ARCn process will hang, as archived redo logs cannot be written to the recovery area. In this situation, you have a number of alternatives to choose from, including backing up files in the recovery area to tape, increasing the size of your recovery area, or modifying your retention policy. R A will not delete the only backup of a database before it has written a new one successfully. MN Therefore, irrespective of your retention policy, you should allocate sufficient space to your recovery area to contain two copies of your database.
